Saint-Petersburg

Saint-Petersburg is the 4th largest city in Europe (after London, Paris and Moscow) and the second largest in Russia with population of 4.6 m. Picturesque views of historic St Petersburg come from its architecture: its streets, large squares, gardens and parks, rivers and numerous canals, monuments and masterpieces dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries such as the Peter and Paul fortress, Alexander-Neva Lavra, the Winter Palace etc.

Among the other interesting places of St. Petersburg are the fountains. The most famous among them is a chain of fountains in Peterhof.

Saint-Petersburg State University

Based in St Petersburg, the university is one of the largest in Russia and the oldest. It was founded in 1724 by Peter the Great, and predates the Moscow State University founded in 1755. It is made of 22 specialised faculties.

As of 2014, the university has a teaching staff of 5,800. St. Petersburg State University is the second best multi-faculty university in Russia after Moscow State University. The university has a reputation for having educated the majority of Russia's current political elite: these include presidents Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev. Eight of the graduates of the university are Nobel Prize recipients (among them Pavlov, Landau and Brodsky).

The Institute of Philosophy

The Institute of Philosophy is one of the University's most important teaching and research departments with a tradition of European classical education in the sciences and philosophy dating back centuries. The Institute is known for its exceptional achievements in the development and proliferation of philosophical education. It is striving for philosophy to be recognized as playing an important part in the primary intellectual sector of Russian society.
