18th International Summer School and Symposium on Humour and Laughter: Theory, Research and Applications
University of Wolverhampton, Telford, UK
2nd-7th July 2018
Course Director: Professor Willibald Ruch
Local Organisers: Josiane Boutonnet Dr. Tracey Platt
Interest in both research on humour and practical applications of humour has increased sharply in recent decades. The aims and objectives for the International Summer School and Symposium on Humour and Laughter are to ensure that both students just beginning their research careers and those already-trained researchers considering a first project on humour will enter the field with a strong foundation in existing theoretical and methodological issues, and will be well versed in the pitfalls confronting the scientific study of humour.
For those interested in practical applications of humour in a variety of applied settings, the course will introduce them to the kinds of approaches that are being used around the world to put humour to work and to deliver the benefits of humour and laughter.
As in previous years, this year of the Summer School is designed not only to fit the needs of new students and early career researchers whose knowledge would be enhanced by a deeper understanding of humour and laughter (in dimensions ranging from the psychological, computational to the practical), but also for trained scholars in the sciences and humanities who are considering embarking on new investigations of humour or laughter related phenomena.
The Symposium is a popular session within the week when the Summer School participants have the opportunity to present their own work, gaining experience and valuable feedback on their concepts and ideas.
