Travel to Zurich

For many of you the travel will have three legs: a) to come to the Zurich train station, either directly (by train or bus) or indirectly (from different airports in Switzerland or other destinations) and b) to go to Boldern/Männedorf from Zurich main station, and c) to take the bus from Männedorf to Boldern. We will describe these below. And we add d) alternative ways.

A1. Getting to Zurich by train

International and national trains arrive at Zürich Hauptbahnhof (Zurich main station). It’s a terminal station. Many countries are accessible with regular trains to and from Zurich and overnight sleeper trains are often available to book.

See location and webcam of Zurich Hauptbahnhof

A2. Getting to Zurich by bus

Coaches are a cheap alternative to flying and arrive at Zurich Carparkplatz, Sihlquai (behind the main train station) on a regular basis from across Europe.

A3. Getting to Zurich by car

We do not recommend using cars in Zürich. However, if you plan to drive to Zurich, this site may be of interest to you, as it offers details of safe driving into the city and ideas for parking.

A4. Getting to Switzerland by air

There are three International airports with easy connections to Zurich. Geneva and Basel/Mulhouse also have a number of low-cost airlines that operate from them. Zurich has a very central location and so is a good place to start a European tour or vacation.

Airport Zurich

Zurich Airport is situated in the north and outside of the city in Kloten. It’s the largest airport in Switzerland. After customs you take a trip to Zurich...

... by train: Trains run between Zurich main station and the airport every 10 minutes during peak periods (travel time: 10 minutes). (Railway-Information)

... by tram: A tram (street car) runs between Zurich airport and the main station at least four times an hour. (Tram 10-Information) (ZVV-Information)

... by taxi. (See section D: Reaching Boldern by alternative means)

Airport Basel

Airport Basel is called Euro Airport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. It is located in France, in the tri-national Upper Rhine Region, i.e. very near to Switzerland and to Germany. EuroAirport is not linked directly to the railway system. To get to Zurich, first

... take the bus: Connection from and to EuroAirport is easy by bus no 50 (timetable) from Basel Central Train Station (SBB). Tickets cost around CHF 4.- and can be purchased at the bureau-de-change in the baggage collection area, at the kiosk outside the airport opposite the bus-stop or from the green coin machine next to the bus-stop.

... then the train: From Basel train station a one-way ticket to Zurich costs CHF 31.- Euro Airport Basel to Zurich main-station takes about 1h 40 min. (Timetables see here)

Bodensee Airport Friedrichshafen

Airport Friedrichshafen is situated in Friedrichshafen, Germany, at the lake of Constance. To Zurich, take

... the train: There are connections to the German railway (Timetable Deutsche Bahn). One-way ticket Friedrichshafen Airport to Zurich main-station (second class) costs € 27.— and takes about 2h 30 min. (Prices: end 2009)

Airport Geneva

Airport Geneva is located in the north-west of Geneva close to the border with France (Official language is French). The CFF / SBB airport railway station brings you to Zurich

... by train: Tickets can be purchased from the machines located in the station (CHF, Euro or credit cards), from the station counters and also from the CFF Ticket Shop. Geneva Airport to Zurich main-station takes about 2h 50 min. A one-way ticket (second class) costs CHF 83.

B. Getting to Boldern

Directions are from Zürich Hauptbahnhof as most airport connections will lead to this station. To get to the convention centre at Männedorf take S-Bahn 7 (direction Rapperswil).

S-Bahn Line 7 (Winterthur - Zürich – Meilen – Rapperswil and back). Departure at Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Zurich main station) every 30 minutes and arrives 21 minutes later. One leaves 12 minutes after the hour and arrives in Männedorf 33 minutes after the hour. The other leaves 18 minutes to the hour and arrives 3 minutes after the hour. (Normally from platform 23/24, check the departure board!)

Ticket: You need a ticket for 5 zones. Adult fare: 9.80 CHF, for one way second class. Tickets are available at blue ticket machines and ticket sales point in the main hall at the station. There are no tickets sold inside the train/tram/bus.

Please note: Penalty for travelling without a valid ticket is CHF 80.- or more.

C. From Männedorf to Boldern (by bus)

Local public buses

Bus nr. 925 (departure at station Männedorf: 6 minutes past every hour) to station Boldernstrasse

Bus nr. 940 (departure at station Männedorf: 36 minutes past every hour) to station Widenbad

(To see the bus stop at train station click on "Verkehr anzeigen" below the map here; to see all bus stops click on the map here)

From the bus station take the footpath to the convention centre (about 7 min.; see location)

D. Reaching Boldern by alternative means

We strongly recommend the sole use of public transport! It is the cheapest and most reliable way to travel in Switzerland. Parking space in and around Zürich is sparse and very expensive. And you might find taxis expensive too. However, if you absolutely want to here are some alternatives.

Taxi from Zurich Airport

The Zurich airport taxi rank is located in front of Arrivals 1 and 2. A taxi ride from Zurich Airport to Zurich city centre costs approximately CHF 60 (€ 42), to convention centre Boldern at Männedorf approximately CHF 120 (€ 84). Taxis may be reserved in advance by calling 0848 850 852. There is also a taxi stand at the main entrance of Zurich Hauftbahnhof.

Taxi from station Männedorf to Boldern convention centre (Hallo Taxi 044 920 44 44) costs about CHF 17 (luggage maybe extra).

Renting a car

Car renting in Switzerland may appear expensive. Herz offers cars in different sizes. Small cars costs about 600 CHF for 6 days to intermediate sized cars about 750 CHF for 6 days. (tax and special insurances not included).
